Orlando, FL August 10 – The Volen Center, which provides adult daycare and programs and services for seniors and caretakers, was honored this month at the Florida Council On Aging’s annual conference. The Volen Center received the 2016 Florida Association of Senior Centers’ Florence R. Goldmann Award for excellence in the development and promotion of senior centers. This is the second time the Volen Center has received this award. “We are thrilled and delighted to have won this prestigious award and we thank the Florida Association of Senior Centers”, said Elizabeth Lugo, President/CEO of the Volen Center.

Florida Association of Senior Centers (FASC) is a network of professionals who serve some 400,000 who visit senior centers every year in Florida. FASC provides information, programming, leadership, expertise, statewide communication, and advocacy for the centers.

The Volen Center first opened its doors in 1968 as the South County Neighborhood Center providing services to low-income members of the community in Boca Raton. In response to community needs and through the generosity of Benjamin and Mae Volen, it later focused its mission on providing services for our aging and disabled populations.

Today, the Center provides day care for seniors with varying degrees of dementia, and adults with disabilities at three locations, while also providing services for caregivers, including counseling, support groups, and information and referral. In 2010, in partnership with the YMCA, the Center opened the Schmidt Family YMCA Preschool at the main campus on Palmetto Park Road in Boca Raton. This program provides a unique intergenerational experience for all participants. Last year, the Volen Center provided almost 75,000 free, hot meals at seven senior dining sites located throughout southern Palm Beach County. Additionally, the Volen Center’s large fleet of buses and

vans provided almost 80,000 rides to and from doctor appointments and other life sustaining destinations during the same year.
